Herbology 101

by Ayriese Smith

What is herbology?

Herbology is the traditional and scientific study of medicinal herbs like marijuana. For our purposes today, we will review popular herbs that you can incorporate into your daily smoking. Herbal smoking has been a part of many cultures for hundreds of years. Different herbs have been used for a variety of different spiritual and medicinal effects. In this pared down article we will identify different herbs commonly used today. Additional research should be done to prevent toxicity and allergic reactions.

Calendula

Also known as the marigold flower it is often smoked for its calming inflammation and pains and helping to boost mood. Best used at night, it can help soothe the lungs with inflammation and help with lucid dreaming. Calendula may cause drowsiness and those allergic to daisies should be aware of potential allergic reactions.

- For sleep: Combine chamomile, lavender, and calendula for a soothing and calming herbal smoke to ease you into sleep.

Chamomile

Chamomile is a great addition to an evening smoking blend to promote relaxation and better sleep. Chamomile has a pretty strong calming reaction on muscles and can help with restless muscles keeping you up at night. Additionally, it is found to have impacts on gut health and menstrual cramps.

- For relaxation: Combine chamomile, lavender, and a hint of mint for a soothing and calming herbal smoke.

Mullein

Like weed, Mullein is a great base to pair with other herbs. Gentle on the lungs, it  has been traditionally used to protect and soothe the respiratory tract. If trying to decrease tobacco usage, this could be a good option for you as Mullein helps calm irritation and inflammation caused from tobacco. Start with a 50/50 blend of tobacco and mullein and slowly decrease the amount of tobacco.

-For medicinal benefits: Blend mullein, marshmallow root, and a bit of echinacea to support respiratory health.

Lavender

This is a herb that should be smoked in moderation as lavender contains compounds that can lead to irritation, headaches, and nausea. Known for its calming and relaxing properties, smoking lavender can help reduce anxiety and promote a peaceful state of mind. Its sweet, floral aroma makes it a popular choice for herbal smoking blends aimed at relaxation. Best paired with Mullein to decrease inflammation. Not recommended for regular, daily use.

Peppermint

Peppermint helps add flavor and taste to a good joint. Also found to help cleanse your respiratory system, improving blood circulation, and relaxation. Peppermint is also beneficial for digestion and can help relieve headaches.

- For a refreshing uplift: Mix peppermint, green tea leaves, and a sprinkle of lemon balm for an invigorating effect.

Herbs

Thank you for joining us on this exploration into combining traditional medicine with current scientific studies. When you do your research, you will find a whole world as we barely touched the tip. You can smoke rose for anti-depressive, mugwort for sleep and lucid dreaming, and even hops for a more relaxing effect akin to marijuana. Yes, the same hops that are used to make beer! The world of plants is a world of wonders, thank you for joining us in exploration of this new plan.
